In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a common assisted reproductive technology (ART) used to treat infertility. It involves combining eggs and sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting. This process allows for the fertilization of eggs and the development of embryos in a controlled environment. The goal is to transfer a healthy embryo into the uterus, where it can implant and develop into a pregnancy. The IVF process typically involves several steps. First, the woman undergoes hormone stimulation to encourage the development of multiple eggs. This is monitored closely by ultrasound and blood tests. Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure. Simultaneously, the male partner provides a sperm sample, which is prepared for fertilization. After egg retrieval, the eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish. Fertilization is monitored, and healthy embryos are selected for further development. Once the embryos reach a suitable stage, they are transferred into the woman’s uterus. Following the embryo transfer, the patient is monitored closely for signs of pregnancy. This process requires patience and careful monitoring, but it can lead to successful pregnancies for many couples.
